“10”

Their name is “10”

Their beauty is “10”

Their love for God is infinite.

“10” taking flight Heaven bound

yet remaining in hearts who have now found

 Ethereal memories lasting

for those who remain

creating a transcendent refrain.

“10” lights illuminating God’s Way

“10” stars burning bright

Loving reminders of continuous light.

“10” out of sorrow streams glorious praise

 for radiant steadfast redemptive days.

 Recanting faith, not these “10”

Angelic, pure souls know their end.

The cause of new rewards,

profound to those who see,

and merciful beginnings from on High

 now they be.

Their name is “10”

Their beauty is “10”

Their love for God is infinite.

Elegy for the Ten Baha'i Women

Oh, ten souls of courage, lost to the night,

In the depths of despair, you faced your plight.

Your lives extinguished, hearts heavy with pain,

A haunting elegy, this solemn refrain.

In Shiraz's square, a tragedy untold,

Where the seeds of injustice took firm hold.

Your spirits unyielding, your voices unheard,

But your legacy echoes in every word.

Each woman, a symbol of unwavering might,

For faith, equality, shining so bright.

Silenced by hatred, but forever they'll be,

Champions of justice, their spirits set free.

With hearts heavy, we mourn your untimely fate,

The world weeps, burdened by this weight.

Yet, through sorrow's veil, a flicker of hope,

In unity we stand, resolute and elope.

Oh, ten Baha'i women, we honor your name,

In our hearts, your memory shall forever remain.

Your sacrifice fuels our unwavering quest,

To build a world where justice shall manifest.

In the realm of eternity, your spirits soar,

Guiding us forward, forevermore.

Rest in peace, dear souls, forever embraced,

Your light shines on, never to be erased.

While we were sleeping

O women of Shiraz!

Do you remember 40 years ago

ten of your sisters disappeared

in the night, while you slept

restless and uneasy, on beds

(approved or overlooked)

by the Revolution?

You did not know ‘til morning

whispered in your ear,

“They’re gone” that the

breezes of cruelty,

had swept them from their

injured feet, across the threshold of

this world— but as you lay

in the pit of dreams, your souls shivered in the shadow of their leaving.

O people of Iran!

You know, they took them from Adelbad prison  to Chowgan-Square and strung them one by one like prayer beads,

on the noose of iniquity.

While you were sleeping

they buried them, it’s said,

without names, without ceremony

in the heretic cemetery

but little did they know

that, sweet are the pure in heart

to the Lord of all Things

and the memory of that sweetness,

incorruptible as honey.

O women of the world!

You lamented those deaths,

your mourning cries, echoing around the globe, your demand for justice

for the martyrs of Shiraz startling

the powers in Tehran. They did not

know ten Iranian woman

of no fame and despised faith had

so many sisters.

You frightened the regime

into furtiveness. But now is the time  to remind them you are awake,

and witnessing.

O people of the world!

Do you remember 40 years ago ten children of God

watched one another die

while, unknowing, we slept in our beds? They would not recant

their faith, their service,

or the rights their humanity

granted them.

They would not recant.

They would not recant.

Keep their sweet steadfastness

on your souls’ tongues.

Let their faces rise up

in your memories, each morning  a new day in which to work and pray for the world’s embrace

of women of conscience.

Let their names ring out

from the bells of your hearts.

who slipped from darkness as we slept— ten uptilted hearts, who, radiant, leapt into Paradise.
